Russian youth struggle with drink and drug abuse – 27 Feb 08

December 5th, 2009 | by admin |

It’s estimated around one hundred and twenty thousand Russians die each year from drug and alcohol abuse. Now Dmitry Medvedev – Vladimir Putin’s likely successor – has promised to tackle the problem if he’s elected president on March 2nd.

But under Putin, Russia’s substance abuse victims have been largely ignored by an administration more keen on promoting its social achievements.

In the third of our series on the State of Russia, Jonah Hull reports from the city of Perm in the Ural Mountains about the problem claiming so many young lives.

    Russia will sooner …
Russia will sooner or later disintegrate into several dozen smaller states. These independent states will be able to start a path towards democracy. Autocracy is not fit for the 21st century. Russia must die

It could be, and if …
It could be, and if so in that case they put in even more work to pretend…they did less or to give that fake reality feeling. First time I thought about that type of fake, anyway where I come from I’ve never seen doing that, when there’s an accent it’s for the reason I pointed out previously

    it sound fake. I …
it sound fake. I think the first voice over of the woman is actually made by an american or someone else, nonrussian. Maybe yeah, they think, that it gives a better reality feeling to it, but well, it does not. whatever

    tehtud2008, I …
tehtud2008, I assume that in order to save some work (and just maybe give a higher reality feeling to it) they reuse the voice of an interpreter translating while the person talks in a foreign language, and most times when the interview is held locally the interpreter is a countrymate of that person and despite speaking english still holds a strong accent from there when translating… .

I agree. I think the american people and russian people would easily get along. It’s the governments who create divisions between us.

    Gomer believe me …
Gomer believe me they already have). But seriously the Russian government needs to fight this problem. Anyone in Russia can buy alchohol, doesn’t matter if you’re 12 or 21 which is crazy. I’m from Russia btw and I remember buying alchohol and cigars when I was 12. It was so simple, the cashier wouldn’t even ask my age. But I stopped drinking and smoking like 11 years ago.

    I never understand, …
I never understand, why they speak in russian acsent when they make a voice over to a russian person??! like wtf? if the voiceover is in english, then let it be english, the acsent does not make it any better, the point of a translation voicever is that we would understand it very good in english. So it should be in very good english, not with a stupid acsent!!! WTF?!… it is so stupid!

Yes, they do – liquor! That’s what the West can still give to Russia, in exchange for its natural resources.

    Estimations for …
Estimations for this year 2009 (according to Goldman Sachs and The Economist)

    China growth + 10%

    India + 8%

    Brazil + 4%

    Europe -5%

    USA – 3%
All these countries need Russian natural resources. Russia is part of the BRIC, and will keep growing in the future. The problem with Russia now is that is has some ties connected to the West, but the West has NOTHING to give in return.

The FUTURE of RUSSIA lies beyond the West.

    They have great …
They have great people, that is for sure.

I went there without speaking the language and stayed 6 months. When I left, I had more friends there than I have here.

I can’t say enough good things about Russian people!

Please Russians only listen to real people. Propagandists have a lot of energy to demoralize you with lies about yourselves. They will stop at nothing – no act is too lowly.

Just do me a favour and never become like them.

This is not a news, since all Russians had a problem with alcoholism since Russia turned communist and it still persists now.
