Good Fiction Books; Drug, Abuse, Realistic, Historical??

February 19th, 2010 | by admin |

I am very picky on books. I have read a lot of books and need new ones to read. I have read from Ellen Hopkins, Melody Carlson, Ruth Pennebaker, Alice Hoffman, Jessica Blank, Ann Rinaldi, etc.

I prefer Adult books because they use stronger words than YA books, but either is fine. Thanks!

    Cost by Roxana Robinson
    Smack by Melvin Burgess
A Million Little Pieces by James Frey (he said it was non-fiction; big scandal=it wasn’t)

If you like Alice Hoffman, I recommend Barbara Kingsolver – my favorite is Prodigal Summer. You might also enjoy The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold: I read they’re making a movie out of that one.

Bastard Out Of Carolina by Dorothy Allison is amazing and emotional. You will absolutely fall in love with the main character, she’s so vulnerable but yet very tough and forgiving.

Geek Love by Katharine Dunn is haunting and slightly disturbing, but, you will be quickly drawn in to the sideshow family of the Binewskis.

How about Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar? It’s a feminist novel about a woman’s struggle with society as well as her struggle with mental illness.
