What are some good drug-free remedies to nasal congestion?
March 1st, 2010 | by admin |Lately my stuffy nose has really gotten worse. I don’t want to keep using the nasal spray indefinitely or I might become dependent on it. So how can I clear my stuffy nose without using drugs? Nobody say blowing it, it never works.
I’ll try all of your suggestions, thanks.
Apart from the heat and steam and essential oils such as eucalyptus I would definitely stay away from conventional nasal sprays as these are known to make matters worse with time. Capsaicin from chili peppers is an excellent natural remedy for clearing nasal congestion, removing mucus from the lungs, clearing the sinuses and anti-allergy if you have seasonal allergies such as allergic rhinitis. I think you might now be able to find a nasal spray with capsaicin as the active ingredient:

Make sure also that you get enough Vitamin C in your diet.
Rosehip tea if you can find this might help also, or mullein tea.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes.

You may want to try this:
1. Boil water…Once it is hot put it in a container…Drop a small amount of eucalyptus liquid or a vaporub in it….
2. Get a large towel, wrap your head and make sure if also covers the container. ( Just like steam bath )
3. Inhale/Exhale for 10 – 15 minutes.
4. Then have someone pat your back..make the palms curls a bit while patting your back with a moderate force… This will help loosening up some phlegm… ( just for 5 to 10 minutes )
There you go… Hope this helps…

Heat and steam. If you don’t have acess to a sauna, put hot water in a bowl, with a towel over your head try to inhale the steam. You can add some vicks vaporub to it, it helps.

If you’ve been using Afrin or some generic version you may already have a habit. It’s only supposed to be taken for 3 days. If you take it more than that your sinus’ will become dependent on it to stay clear. You have to stop using it altogether and it takes a few weeks to get over dependence. I’m on Astiline nasal spray which is pricey. You should see an allergist to find the cause. My sinus’ were 90% blocked and I had to have surgery. Also get saline solution spray and use daily. Over time it helps.

Sounds like you have allergies. If you want them to go away, start taking LOCAL honey-a teaspoon a day. It will work with your body’s defenses to develop an immunity to all the air born irritants around you-including dust, pet dander, pollen, and mold. Like all herbal remedies, it will take a while to work. Gradually you will see an improvement and you will also notice that you don’t get as many cold and flu symptoms either. If you need a quick fix, put 2 teaspoons of salt in half a glass of warm water and inhale-a teaspoon at a time- into your nostrils. This will clean out the mucus and guard against infection in your sinuses. Try not to blow your nose too hard as this will cause lesions in the sinus cavities where infection can grow. These are NATURAL remedies that have no side effects and will cause no long term damage to areas in your body.

you can get saline nasal rinse kits from most pharmacies (the most common brand i see is NeilMed Sinus Rinse). you basically just spray the saline water up your nose and rinse the stuff out. it isnt pretty doing it but they work pretty well

There are these ceramic pots you can buy that you fill with warm salt water (and sometimes herbs) and then pour it into one nostril and let it flow through and out the other. This works really well at cleaning out what is in there and after a few times can help heal your nasal passages. If you don’t want to but the pot, use one of those bulb syringes or eye dropper.

Nasal sprays only give short term relief and they can actually damage your sinuses.
Switching from mucus generating dairy products and red meat to soy milk and white meat will help.
