Yes, …
@j3b1diah
Yes, you’re right.
However, his main point is that criminalization DOESN’T stop people from taking drugs. He even argues, very convincingly, that prohibition leads to people taking HARDER drugs.

Hey
I think you’ve missed his main point. Yes, drug taking causes problems, but the point is CRIMINALIZATION DOESN’T STOP PEOPLE FROM TAKING DRUGS. All criminalization does is make the problem worse.
Besides, the real problem is the drugs INDUSTRY, not the petty crimes of a minority of drug addicts.
Cheers.

@jblackmel But is …
@jblackmel But is the government to blame when a parent or child decides, with full knowledge about the dangers, to start using drugs.
The war on drugs is going on for decades, but did that stop people from getting addicted and affecting their families and friends. How about the right to bear arms, did that stop robberies or murder?
People do the things they do, despite knowing the dangers. Like skiing, skydiving etc. Why not forbid these activities because they affect friends and family too?

@j3b1diah Are you …
@j3b1diah Are you dense? If drugs where legalized, why the would a drugsaddic commit a crime? The price of 10 pounds of marijuana would be less then 1 pound of any exotic fruit you can find at your local market.
Any substance giving some sort of enjoyment is potentially addictive, but Friedman states that in an free educated civil society, everyone should be accountable for the choices they make. After all, people aren’t forced to do drugs, still they do, albeit knowing the dangers.

@LibertyPen Your …
@LibertyPen Your argument is weak when you look at the fact that “many” things that are legal also “affect the lives of those that surround” the user.
By jblackmel on Apr 4, 2010 | Reply
You say that drugs …
You say that drugs “affect the lives on those that surround the user,” therefore it should not be legal. If that is the case, is that a argument to ban manufacturing factories that studies have should increases the potential for cancer? What about power lines which, according to some studies, also contribute to cancer. What about making cigarettes illegal which, is more harmful when people “surrounding” a smoker is affected.

That a specious …
That a specious argument, the same can easily said for alcohol, but we all know where that prohibition went. If you’re not violating another person’s rights there’s no justification for legal involvement.

People who take …
People who take drugs responsibly, whether they be alcohol, marijuana, valium, xanax, morphene patches, cocaine, or whatever should not be harassed by the law. would you agree? crime = behavior. i do acknowledge that many drug users do violate the rights of others and they need to pay for their actions in all situation. but, it is not like drug laws like accomplish anything beyond funding another bureaucracy and providing an excuse for the state to violate rights. We have more users than ever.

@fzqlcs FInally …
@fzqlcs FInally something we both agree on! That is exactly what needs to happen, require responsibility of other’s actions. That’s what’s wrong with certain liberals, they ask for liberty but don’t want to take responsibility for their actions!

most actions effect …
most actions effect others. be careful not to criminalize things you merely don’t like. that will come back to bite your liberty in the ass. require responsible behavior. beyond that, live and let live.

@fzqlcs I …
@fzqlcs I completely agree with you. But it is when those personal choices affect others that their legality is questioned.
Remember: Your liberty ends where another’s begins.

Here is a serious …
Here is a serious question for you. Why, in a free country, is criminality not limited to the violation of one’s personal, property or civil rights–instead of including the political status of ingested substances? Criminality should be about behavior, not individual choices. Tell me where I am wrong.

@fzqlcs If you take away the way they make money they’ll find another way to make money illegally. If you legalize theft then murder rate would INCREASE.

using this logic, maybe we should legalize theft to reduce the murder rate.

What will happen if …
What will happen if suddenly all the drug cartels run out of business because drugs are legal? Do you think they’re just going to go back to being normal hard working citizens? Of course not! They are going to look for another way to break the law and get easy money. Kidnapping? Stealing? Murder? There are suddenly going to be thousands of criminals without a way to make money and I can bet my house that you won’t see them working at McDonald’s.
